NSEA Swim offers Red Cross training for both Lifeguarding and
Water Safety Instructors (WSI) on a regular basis!
Lifeguarding
Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
Prerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 300 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water swimming 20 yards surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point exit the water without using steps or a ladder. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years. This is a three day course usually offered several times per year. Course Fees: $250.00
Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
This course also known as WSI™ trains American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. The courses and presentations include Parent and Child Aquatics Levels 1 and 2 Preschool Aquatics Levels 1 - 3 Learn-to-Swim Levels 1 - 6 three adult courses as well as the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses and more.
Prerequisites: To enroll instructor candidates must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course and successfully complete the pre-course session which includes demonstration of swimming skill at Learn-to-Swim Level 4. This is a three day course, see dates and times below. Course Fees: $350.
Jr. Lifeguarding
The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding program introduces youth to the fundamentals of lifeguarding and water safety in a fun and challenging environment. Participants build strong swimming skills, learn basic rescue techniques, and develop leadership and teamwork abilities.
Students will be introduced to:
Water safety and surveillance skills
Basic rescue techniques
First aid, CPR, and AED awareness
Injury prevention and emergency response concepts
This program is ideal for strong swimmers who are interested in becoming lifeguards in the future.
Prerequisites: Minimum age: 12 years; Swim 50 yards front crawl (with rotary breathing) continuously and 50 yards breaststroke continuously; Tread water for 1 minute using only the legs; and complete a water competency sequence. Participants who successfully complete the Jr. Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Jr. Lifeguarding.
This is a week-long course usually offered in early summer. Course Fees: $100
